**** If you read this in your email, there was a character mistake that has been fixed in the article. My baaaad.
I’m about to head off to my first photography meeting, I’m pretty excited and nervous at the same time. Dawn Shields will be at our meeting speaking on personal projects. Dawn is an award-winning photographer. She mainly does weddings and portraits, and even though that isn’t my forte as of yet, I’m lucky to be able to attend this and hear her speak. If I have anything to share later, I will do my best to post it.
Now, on another note, if you say Russel Crowe was the worst choice for Javert in Les Miserables, there’s the door, and I hope someone punches your face off when you get outside. I bought the motion picture soundtrack highlight CD today, and I am as blown away by it as I was when I saw the movie in theatres on Christmas day. Everyone including the guy at the bookstore I bought the CD at is poking fun at him. Adam Lambert freaking blasted the guy. As if Russel Crowe is renowned for his musical ability, he came in and delivered a very satisfying performance throughout the entire movie. Maybe he is, from a vocal point, a little rough around the edges. But, think of this: does Javert have the same story as Jean Valjean, Fantine, Cosette, or for that matter anyone else in the movie? No. He doesn’t. And that leads me to believe that he doesn’t have the emotion that everyone else does as they tell their stories. And that leads me to believe his voice is going to be gruff, unpolished, and perhaps not perfect at a point in the movie.
After that rant, I should point out that I am completely heterosexual.
I don’t really have another format to voice my opinion, so I am really sorry if you came here looking for photography. The least I can do for all of my followers is post a picture. So, here it is. When I was out this weekend, I drove past a house for sale that still had tornado damage from May 2011. It looked like someone had started to repair the insides, but the exterior was so distressed. And, on the house hung a flag, presumably that survived the tornado. For your seeing and critiquing enjoyment, here:
One thing I have already heard was that I need to “get up close and personal” with my subject, if my subject was indeed the flag. I replied to the guy “yeah, I was just trying to get out and shoot some stuff”. He said to me “I do that too… Just shooting something that looks cool. What you need to figure out is what are you trying to say with this photo?“.
My response was “yeah… well, I just got the damn thing, so I was really making sure it just works”, but he does indeed serve up some food for thought.
Anyways, let me know what you thought of Russel Crowe in Les Miserables and let me know what you think of the photo in the comment section below. I’m out for now!
I dig the shot you posted. I think it goes back to Dawn Shields and personnel projects. I’m sure this photo probably says a lot to you, and frankly that’s all that should really matter.
I guess for me , it gives the idea that through thick and thin, there is always survival, and the idea that the things that matter will always somehow make it through.
Keep shooting what you want.
I think you and I are on the same page. It honestly didn’t “say” much to me until I got home and pulled it up in Lightroom. I got that survival, maybe even distressed feel from it too. I also got the feel that we’re almost two years out and there are portions of the city that haven’t been touched or dealt with much, and they’re completely overshadowed by the businesses and homes that have been rebuilt and reopened. Thank you very much for the comment, I hope you’ll stop by again soon.
I am new to your blog but already I love it…you are funny and your perspective on life is is harmony with mine…I just haven’t quite gone there with my sense of humor yet because I was afraid I lost mine for a bit. I don’t have anything to say about Les Mis because I, for some reason, have no desire to go see it (don’t hate me). As for the photo though, anything in black and white (in my opinion) is awesome! But honestly you did good here. Excellent use of the rule of thirds, both vertically and horizontally. Like how the tip of the flag is off the edge a little. And you’re not facing your subject (the flag and/or the house) so your depth of field is on point as well. Everywhere you go with your camera, whatever the situation (seriously, push yourself), get into a habit of crouching lower, hiding behind other objects, moving around to get different angles. Trust me, you will learn so much, and your photography will be interesting, no matter what. Right now, my obsession is “empty space.” Say, someone in a field with a blue sky and a few scattered clouds. I’ll get them in the bottom of the frame and the majority of the photo will be the sky above them. I don’t know exactly why I love that so much, but it gives such a mysterious feel. I really do look forward to seeing more from you! And I’m here if EVER you have a question, seriously. Twitter, Facebook, Email, etc. On call 24/7. With the exception of sleep, of course. And dinner time.
Dinner time would be a crime. I’ll try to take into consideration you’re in a different time zone. I love the empty space idea. I’ve seen some works that utilize it and if it’s done correctly, is freaking awesome. I’ll keep an eye out on your stuff, I’m excited. And thanks for being there for my lens questions here and on twitter. You seriously rock and I’m glad blogging crossed our paths!
First I like Russell Crow. He is indeed rough around the edges and that’s why I like him. I’ve never read or have I ever seen Les Miserabe. From what others tell me though is that the movie is GREAT. Maybe I will go and see it based on their review.
As for your picture. Who cares about the composure. This will come in time. If this the way you saw the world then the photo is wonderful. If you want to move forward read up on some composure techniques.
Some of my favorite photos are from my teens. I had no idea on what F-stops, ISO, compensation, lighting balance or any remotely technical. I just shot! This is were every photographer begins. It is this that will lead to your style. Don’t try to mimic someone else. It doesn’t reflect who you are.
Keep on going out with the camera. Experiment, explore and learn. Be sure to visit your photos often and begin to find your flow. You’ll be amazed at your work as time goes on.
Thanks for giving the chance to see you grow.
I cannot reccomend Les Miz enough. In fact, I am watching the original as I am typing!
Those are very reassuring words. I do put my stuff out there for people to judge as they wish, and sometimes people are a little harsh. It is taking some time for me to understand that photography is all about what it means to ME, and you did a great job of reassuring me of that.
As for your last comment, it really struck me. If you have a chance to read my newest blog, I didn’t “call you out”, but I did make mention of the comment. I feel extrordinarily blessed to have someone like you reading my blog. Thank you!
Les Mis is not yet available here in the motherland ( 🙂 ) but am looking forward to it. Russel Crowe~ brilliant actor, whatever he does will be fine by me. Hugh Jackman ~ could look at his face forever. Nothing wrong with your photograph. It has context and great textures. Already with Lightroom? You are forging on full steam ahead, I had to build up to lightroom lol. BTW checked out the zombie website, am so excited re the Brad movie thanks for the links it looks amazing.
Don’t miss it when it makes it to the “motherland” haha! And yes, I’m taking that full steam ahead approach. It’s kind of that sink or swim deal, except.. don’t tell anyone… but I never fully learned how to swim, so this could get really interesting 🙂
And thank you for stopping by zombiescantbreakdance! I wish I had more original material to write about over there, but I am super pumped for the movie! I got sooo close to interviewing Max Brooks, but his side backed out, damn it.
Admiring the hard work you put into your blog and in
depth information you provide. It’s great to come across a blog every once in a while that isn’t the same out of date
rehashed information. Wonderful read! I’ve saved your site and I’m including your RSS
feeds to my Google account.
